For players looking to up their game or practise on their own time, we recommend exploring additional types of badminton equipment.
From advanced rackets and shuttlecocks to specialized shoes and attire, there's a range of gear designed to enhance your childs performance on the court.
While stylish shoes and smart-looking attire can be a nice addition, prioritizing function over aesthetics is essential when it comes to your badminton equipment.
In this article, we'll cover the five basic pieces of equipment and gear needed for a game of badminton.
1. Badminton Racket
Badminton rackets come in various materials, resulting in different combinations of weight, balance points, and string tensions.
With so many options, it takes time to find the racket best suited to your playing style.
Instead of purchasing online, visit a badminton shop for assistance. Select a racket that feels comfortable, and swing it around to get a sense of its overall weight and grip.
Popular badminton brands include Yonex, ProKennex, Wilson, ProTech, and Li-Ning. For more detailed guidance, refer to “How to Choose Your Badminton Racket.”

2. Shuttlecock
There are two types of shuttlecocks: plastic and feathered.
Plastic shuttlecocks are more durable and recommended for beginners due to their longevity and lower cost. They are heavier, travel shorter distances, and are often used by young children for recreational play.
This makes them suitable for training and building strength before transitioning to feathered shuttlecocks, which are used in competitive tournaments despite their higher cost and tendency to fray easily with improper technique.
3. Protective Eyewear
Protective eyewear is essential for kids playing badminton to prevent eye injuries. Badminton is a fast-paced sport where the shuttlecock can travel at high speeds, posing a risk to the eyes.
Lightweight, shatterproof goggles made of polycarbonate are ideal, offering both comfort and durability. Ensure the eyewear fits snugly without obstructing vision, and look for models with adjustable straps for a secure fit.
3. Badminton Shoes
Badminton shoes are designed to provide better traction and grip, helping you stop quickly to return a shot.
They should be lightweight and have good cushioning to absorb the impact when you jump or land. Regular players may find heel cups useful for prolonging the lifespan of their shoes.
4. Badminton Attire
For casual or non-competitive players, a comfortable pair of shorts and a cotton or dri-fit T-shirt are sufficient. Some players may also choose to use hand grips, wristbands, and ankle guards, each serving a purpose while adding a dash of color to your outfit.
When selecting badminton equipment, prioritize functionality before considering aesthetics. With this in mind, have fun shopping and gearing up for your next match!
